Understanding Winter Pool Water Levels in South Florida

Dear Valued Customer,

We have received a few inquiries regarding dropping water levels, and we want to provide some helpful information. While a leak is always a possibility, it is very common for pools in South Florida to lose water more rapidly during January.

This is primarily due to “Evaporation Season,” caused by several factors:

  • Low Humidity: Dry winter air pulls moisture from the pool surface much faster than the humid air of the summer.

  • Temperature Spikes: When the water is warmer than the cool night air (especially if you use a pool heater), evaporation accelerates significantly.

  • Increased Wind: Stronger winter breezes across the water surface act as a vacuum, lifting moisture away.

  • Lack of Rainfall: Without our usual summer afternoon showers, the natural refill process is absent.

Our Recommendation: Please ensure your water level stays at the mid-point of the skimmer opening. If it drops too low, the pump may draw in air, which can lead to equipment issues.

If you suspect the loss is more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch per day, please let us know; a leak detection inspection and recommendations may be necessary.
